Summer Internships

Students interested in exploring career options in the social enterprise field are encouraged to pursue a summer internship in nonprofit, public or social entrepreneurial organizations. To make these internships financially viable for students and the participating organizations, the Office of the Dean, through the Center for Nonprofit Management and the Carol and Larry Levy Social Entrepreneurship Lab will provide a limited number of matching stipends to qualified students. These stipends will be on a matching basis and up to a maximum of $10,000 in total compensation (i.e. Employer + Kellogg stipend cap). While there is value to a volunteer experience, this program will not provide funds unless the organization is providing a stipend.

Selection Criteria
Decisions to provide a matching stipend are based on the involvement of the student, the relevance of the summer internship to long-term career goals and the overall demand for support. Stipends are restricted to Kellogg School students in the first summer between their first and second years at Kellogg. Students must pursue summer internships with 501(c)3 organizations, governmental entities, recognized international non-governmental organizations, or social entrepreneurial organizations.

Internship Requirement
Upon receipt of funds, students must provide information about their internship in the Career Management System. You will be able to enter this information through your individual CMC homepage by clicking on the ‘Job Reporting’ link and following the instructions.

Following your summer experience, you must complete a report in the Intern-Net internship database. The database allows you to give feedback about your experience and serves as a useful resource for other students. When you return in the fall, you will be reminded to complete a report.

Application Process
To apply, students must complete and submit the Summer Internship application form. (word doc 648 KB/ 2 pages) to Kendra Busse, SEEK Program Administrator, at k-busse@kellogg.northwestern.edu. The deadline for submissions is Friday, May 4, 2012. Decisions will be made within two weeks. Applicants will be notified of the selection decision via e-mail.
