Student Leaders

Key Dates for Students Interested in GIM Leadership | Application Process

Student leadership is a key component of the Kellogg GIM experience. Working with the support of their GIM Advisor, student leaders shape the in-country experience for all GIM participants. Each GIM class provides four key student leadership positions:

  • Field Study
    • Network with current students, alumni, and other business contacts to find promising hosts for plenary sessions
    • Arrange five to eight all-class, in-country meetings with multi-national corporations, industry leaders, government officials, etc.
  • Logistics
    • Work with travel provider on in-country arrangements
    • Determine cultural outings, group dinners, optional events, and overall schedule structure in-country
  • Marketing
    • Promote GIM experience within the Kellogg community
    • Document GIM experience, including photographs, videos, and Merger article
    • Design class t-shirts
    • Arrange alumni/new admit reception in-country
  • Treasurer
    • Manage GIM class finances, including receipts and payments
    • Assist Global Programs office with obtaining Financial Aid for all interested GIM participants

These leadership roles can involve significant amounts of time (especially as the in-country experience draws closer), including regular, mandatory meetings with GIM Advisors and the Global Programs office. We therefore recommend students consider their fall and winter quarter schedules before committing to a GIM leadership position. However, the majority of leaders will also have committees comprised of classmates who will help them complete their deliverables.

Leaders are automatically enrolled in their GIM classes, and do not spend bid points in order to participate in the program.

Please submit the form below and the required attachments no later than September 24th, at 8 AM for Full-time students and October 8th, at 8am for Part-time students.

Students may apply to a mix of leadership positions across the various GIM classes. However, we strongly recommend that students choose positions and GIM regions that align with their backgrounds, skill sets, and goals for their time at Kellogg. Each application will be considered by the respective GIM Advisor, who will conduct interviews and make all leadership placements.

Please do not underestimate the importance of the statement of interest.

Complete the following steps all in direct sequence:

Step 2. Statement of Interest

Answer the following questions, totaling no more than a page. Send your answers via email as an attached Word file to GIM by the deadline. The more specifics you can offer in your responses, the more informed decisions we can make in terms of where to place students.

If you are applying to more than one leadership position, please submit a separate statement of interest for each position and region (for example, Middle East, field study leader; Latin America, field study leader; Latin America, marketing leader). Do not combine your leadership choices into one, large document; send them as distinct attachments. Label the attachments according to this format: region of study-leadership position (ex. Japan-Korea-logistics).

1. What positions are you interested in? (Please list all.)

2. Why this GIM trip?

3. Why this leadership position?

4. What about your background, skill sets, goals will help you contribute to this position and leadership team?

Step 3. Resume

Please send a current version of your resume via email as an attached Word file to Debbie Kraus.

Decision Process

The majority of GIM Advisors will interview all students who apply, though this is at the individual GIM Advisor’s discretion. The GIM Advisor will contact interested students individually to schedule interview times.

Leadership offers will commence Monday, October 1st, at 5:00 PM, and end Wednesday, October 3rd, at 5:00 PM for full-time students. Part-time students will hear by the end of the week of October 8th. All students will have 24 hours to respond to any offers.

Each leadership team will have between four and six leaders.

If you have any questions about this process, please feel free to contact Debbie Kraus.

Thanks for your interest in the GIM program, and we look forward to working with the 2012 – 2013 GIM leaders.
