For the eighth
year, Kellogg's Health Industry Management Program has sponsored
a summer session for the Institute for Diversity in Health Management.
The Institute, developed by AHA, ACHE, and NAHSE, encourages
minority students to consider healthcare management careers.
Jim Drury continues to act as the academic director for the
Chicago area for the summer.
During the week prior to their internships, the students visited
the Evanston Campus from June 25-29, 2001 and attended classes
in Leverone Hall. They also made several site visits during
the week. The students, ranging from those entering their senior
year in College to those in their first year of their graduate
programs, heard from several illustrious Kellogg faculty members:
Professor Thomas Prince; Institute for Health Services Research
and Policy Studies Fellow Cheryl Rucker, M.D., M.P.H.; HIM Program
Director and Professor, Joel Shalowitz, M.D.; Professor Alicia
Löffler, and Mark Kennedy, Senior Lecturer in Management
and Organizations.

More than
three hundred students applied for the approximately 85 openings
nationwide for 2001.
In addition
to the lectures and discussions led by Kellogg faculty during
the week, the students made several visits to some of Chicago's
leading healthcare organizations. They took a tour of Evanston
Hospital and had lunch with CEO Ray Grady. As well, they took
a tour of Evanston's Wagner Health Center with Mather Foundation
V.P. Joe Haughney (MBA '76) as host. He also served as a discussant
on long-term care issues. Additionally, a trip was made to
Chicago on the afternoon of June 26th to spend a couple of
hours with nationally recognized CEOs. They first met with
Gary Mecklenburg, CEO of Northwestern Memorial Healthcare
Corporation and this year's Chairman of the Board of the American
Hospital Association. The students then visited with Wayne
Lerner, Dr PH, FACHE, CEO of the nationally recognized Rehabilitation
Institute of Chicago, who led the group on a tour of the hospital
and discussed rehab issues.
Jim Drury and Lorraine Hasabe, now a recruiter with Marakon
Associates and formerly Associate Director of Kellogg's Career
Management Office, spent the final day of the program discussing
a variety of career issues with the students.
The students who participated in the Chicago program this
year are: Edna Flores, Sima Patel, Paula Hughes and Yasmin
Wilson (all at Cook County Bureau of Health Services Facilities);
Cara Moore (at Evanston Hospital); Georgetta Robinson and
Herbert Cummings (with Mt. Sinai Hospital of Chicago); Aja
Hardy (with Abbott Laboratories); Amir Farooqi (at ACHE);
Rayya Habeeb (at Harmony Health Plan); and Gregory Milton
and Monika Black (both at Northwestern Memorial Hospital).

Night
on the town! Institute for Diversity interns were given
a dinner at Evanston's Roxy Cafe following their successful
completion of their academic week at Kellogg. |
Each Friday
the students also spent a half-day on site visits to a variety
of different healthcare and health-related institutions. These
Friday field trips were organized by Cheryl Douthard, V.P.
for Education of the National Association of Health Services
Executives (Chicago Chapter). Ms. Douthard and Mr. Drury arranged
for an August 16 graduation ceremony at Kellogg's James L.
Allen Center. At that ceremony students presented summaries
of their internship projects. Institute President Rupert Evans
was the keynote speaker at the event and remarks were also
given by Shirley Bomar-Cole, past president of NAHSE's
Chicago Chapter.
The Chicago-area preceptors participating in this year's Institute
were: ACHE EVP Karen Hackett; Mt. Sinai's Monique Glover;

William Dwyer of Abbott Laboratories; Robert Triplett of Cook
County's Provident Hospital; Annette Carney of Cook County's
