HIM / Biotech Alumni Newsletter

Letter from the Kellogg HIM / Biotechnology Alumni Board President

Greetings Fellow Alumni:

Board Officers Ted Pfieffer, Jason Scarlett, and myself led a recent effort to update and focus the roles and responsibilities of Alumni Board members. As I will be rotating out of the Presidency (but remaining on the Board), the roles of the new officers – President (Ted Pfieffer), VP/Treasurer (Jason Scarlett), and Interim Secretary (Rebecca Wildman) – remain as in the Association’s charter (bylaws). The member roles, approved at a recent Board meeting, are as follows (more than one Board member may be involved with the activities):

School Liaison -- facilitates communication between the Board and school. Specific duties include:

  • Representative to student club(s)
  • Works with Program staff on student scholarships/awards
  • Identifies opportunities to participate in and support student/alumni activities
  • Communicates Association programs/activities to students
  • Representative to Kellogg Alumni Office

Programming -- develops and coordinates events for Association members and non-members, including speakers, symposia, and networking events. Specific duties, in coordination with Program leadership, include:

  • Brainstorm potential events, formats, and speakers
  • Solicit potential speakers
  • Work with Communications to develop promotional materials

Sponsor Development -- provides/coordinates Board support of Program efforts to develop outside sponsors, particularly around programs (e.g. MacEachern). Specific duties, in coordination with Program leadership, include:

  • Establish annual and per-event sponsorship goals
  • Create/adopt guidelines for solicitation of sponsors (in conjunction with Program and School practices)
  • Design sponsorship opportunities
  • Identify potential/target sponsors
  • Coordinate sponsor solicitation

Communications -- develops communication links with/among Association members, and promotes Association events. Specific duties include:

  • Oversight of Association web site maintenance and development
  • Even advertising and promotion
  • Contributions to Program newsletter

Membership Development -- grows the roster of active (dues paying) Association members and coordinates efforts in selection of Alumni Award recipients. Specific duties include:

  • Develop and maintain member contact information
  • Establish annual membership goals
  • Lead outreach to potential members, including specific recruitment of new healthcare/biotech graduates
  • Recommend membership dues policies
  • Induce/facilitate members registration and dues payment

And, indeed, the Alumni Board is interested in adding some additional members.

Want to become involved? If you are interested in being considered for the open slots, you may want to send a resume to Ted Pfieffer at TedP@tiber.com, then join us on the Board conference call on either of two dates (August 20 or September 24) both at 6 pm (CST) with the following call-in information: phone: 1-800-659-1081; conference Chair will be Ted Pfieffer.

Regards,
Tracy Heilman
