CHENG (STELLA) JI '11

Program: One-Year (1Y) Program
Nationality: Chinese
Intended Career Path: Consulting or healthcare investment
Intended Majors: Finance, Marketing, Health Enterprise Management
Educational background: Bachelor’s of economics in international finance, Fudan University, Shanghai
Sponsored by a company: Yes, Boston Consulting Group

Why did you pursue an MBA, and in particular, why the 1Y program?
After three years in consulting, I wanted to take a step back and focus on leadership development and personal growth, build a strong network, and take a holistic approach to my future career. The 1Y program is a perfect match because it helps accelerate my career progress.

How do you feel about the academic opportunities at Kellogg, and how have you structured your time in the classroom while in the 1Y Program?
Kellogg has truly exceptional and well-rounded course offerings in all majors. With limited core course requirements, the 1Y program provides students with full flexibility to choose based on personal interests and career development. I’ve taken courses mainly in finance, marketing, and healthcare management.

How do 1Ys fit into the greater student body population of Kellogg community (2Ys, PT, EMBA)?
1Ys have full exposure to all students in the Kellogg community. We’ve taken classes, attended club events, and organized business conference together with 2Ys and Part-Time students. It has helped me build a wide network with life-long friendships.

What were your first impressions of Kellogg?
I was truly surprised by the diversity of opportunities that Kellogg offers to develop leadership skills. You can serve on the board of a high-profile local nonprofit organization or help organize a trip to Africa to support a local AIDS program. You can meet world-renowned experts who come to campus to speak. You can actually manage a multimillion dollar portfolio in the Asset Management Practicum. Every opportunity you take adds value and color to your Kellogg experience.
