About Global Initiatives in Management (GIM)

Global Initiatives in Management (GIM) is a cornerstone of the Kellogg School of Management’s international curriculum. Launched in 1990, when a group of students organized a class and study trip to the former Soviet Union, GIM currently consists of thirteen classes of approximately 450 students drawn from the school’s full-time, part-time, and executive MBA programs.

Each GIM class focuses on a country or region, beginning with 10 weeks of classroom instruction and culminating in an intensive two-week field study trip. Classes are made up of about 35 students grouped into small research teams. These teams conduct primary research on leading-edge topics under the supervision of a faculty adviser. The research summaries available on International Focus highlight some of the key findings of student research projects since 2006.

From its founding in 1990, GIM has provided a structured experiential learning and small-team project research experience to several thousand Kellogg students traveling to 36 countries. Past GIM research has formed the basis for several books: Kellogg on China (2004), Global Corporate Citizenship (2007), and Winning Strategies for the Indian Market (forthcoming), all published by Northwestern University Press. GIM’s publication initiatives have benefited from the generous support of the J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Foundation.
